Electoral Commission lauds peaceful village elections for older persons and PWDs, as youth polls loom

Polling for Village Older Persons Committees concluded on June 16th, followed by polls for Village PWD Committees on June 17th. According to the EC, both processes were conducted smoothly.

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Uganda reported a successful and largely peaceful completion of village-level elections for Special Interest Group (SIG) Committees for Older Persons and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

This announcement was made today by Justice Byabakama Mugenyi Simon, Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, as part of an update on the 2025/2026 General Elections Roadmap.

The elections, a crucial step in ensuring representation for marginalized groups, took place across the nation’s 71,208 villages.

The nomination process for all three SIGs – Older Persons, PWDs, and Youth – was conducted concurrently from June 2nd to 10th at Sub County, Town Council, and Municipal Division headquarters. Campaigns followed from June 12th to 14th.

Polling for Village Older Persons Committees concluded on June 16th, followed by polls for Village PWD Committees on June 17th. According to the EC, both processes were conducted smoothly.

“The reports we have received from across the country so far, indicate that the concluded village committee elections were peaceful and conducted in an atmosphere of tranquility,” stated Justice Byabakama. “Older Persons & PWDs elections were peaceful with no major incidents.”

The voting process involved members of the respective electoral colleges lining up behind the portraits, symbols, agents, or individual candidates of their choice.

The Commission expressed its gratitude to the members of the electoral colleges for Older Persons and Persons with Disabilities for their participation and commitment to peaceful conduct.

Looking ahead, the Electoral Commission is turning its attention to the upcoming Village Youth Committee elections, scheduled for June 19th. Justice Byabakama urged youth to emulate the peaceful conduct of the previous elections.

“Youth, let’s keep the calm during your village elections on [June 19th], 2025,” he urged. “Line up, vote, and promote unity.”

The successful completion of these village-level elections marks a significant milestone in the preparation for the 2025/2026 General Elections, demonstrating the Electoral Commission’s commitment to inclusive representation and a peaceful electoral process.

The EC will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the Roadmap implementation progresses.
