FREEDOM CITY STAMPEDE: After releasing Abitex, police turn to bouncers, MCs & askaris for questioning

This follows the tragic New Year concert incident at Freedom City in Namasuba, a Kampala suburb, where ten people lost their lives in a stampede as they rushed to watch New Year fireworks.  

Police has this morning summoned the proprietor of the Freedom City building, the managers, other organizers of the event, the masters of ceremony, ushers, bouncers and private security guards for questioning.

This follows the tragic New Year concert incident at Freedom City in Namasuba, a Kampala suburb, where ten people lost their lives in a stampede as they rushed to watch New Year fireworks.

Police and the office of the DPP have managed to charge the promoter of the event, a one Abby Musinguzi aka Abitex, with 9 counts of Rash or Negligent Acts causing death C/S 277 of the Penal Code Act.

Abitex who was arrested on Monday after Police established that there were defects in the planning and control of the concert was yesterday released on Police Bond.

Also summoned are police officers and other security personnel who were deployed to secure the event. At a later stage, we shall listen to the parents of some of the children to establish how they separated from them and got trapped in the passageway and gates,” SCP Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesman, said in a statement.

“Additionally, we are going to share a comprehensive list of guidelines on various aspects of planning and managing events, in partnership with the police, in order to avoid a repeat of such tragic incidents,” Enanga added.
