Gen Kainerugaba, NBA Africa CEO discuss basketball development in Uganda

The meeting built on earlier discussions held in Uganda in March, focusing on possible collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports to establish a Junior NBA League in the country.

Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Adviser for Special Operations, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has met with NBA Africa Chief Executive Officer Claire Akamanzi in Kigali, Rwanda, to discuss opportunities for advancing basketball development in Uganda.

The meeting built on earlier discussions held in Uganda in March, focusing on possible collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Sports to establish a Junior NBA League in the country.

The proposed programme aims to promote basketball among young people while nurturing values such as teamwork, discipline, leadership, and a strong work ethic.

The talks are part of NBA Africa’s broader strategy to partner with African governments and private sector players in areas including sports infrastructure, digital services, creative industries, and hospitality.

Uganda already has a growing presence in international basketball, with clubs City Oilers and Namuwongo Blazers participating in the NBA-affiliated Basketball Africa League.

Meanwhile, Ugandan broadcasters UBC and NBS are set to begin airing NBA games in the country from September, further expanding access to the sport among fans.
