The love story of Bobi Wine, real names Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, and his wife Barbie Itungu Kyagulanyi, was akin to the story of the beauty and beast when it started.
It was a story of an uptown beauty falling in love with a ghetto ragtag bad boy whose rise to fame was churning out a monster dancehall song titled akagoma in 2002. To many, it was a mismatch.
Barbie must have had her gods on her side when she accepted to date a dreadlocked upcoming ghetto musician. What she saw in Bobi Wine, we didn’t see. When we empathized with her, her gut was cheering her on; for she had found her jewellery in the dust.
This love was concreted when the two, on August 27, 2011, at Lubaga Cathedral, walked down the aisle and said I do to each other before Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga. The two were in love.
And, 11 years down the road, Bobi Wine, now without dreadlocks and a leading politician remains deeply rooted in love with Barbie, the move of their four children.
To mark their eleventh anniversary, taking to Facebook, Bobi Wine in a brief but loving message to Barbie re-echoed his love for her with absolute and pure certainty.
“On this day 11 years ago, your father handed you to me in Lubaga Cathedral and we pronounced our vows to each other before Archbishop Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.
“We took the holy sacrament of matrimony together. You even tattooed my face on your back, kyokka mwana gwe! What a day that was, what a beautiful experience! It’s like only yesterday.
“Dear Barbie Kyagulanyi, it’s been such an honour being married to you. I couldn’t imagine a better companion. May this, our 11th wedding anniversary bring you sweet memories of our love story. I love you so much,” the singer wrote on Facebook.
