Japan releases Shs327 million for a neonatal intensive care unit in Kasese district
Bwera is the only public hospital in Kasese district with 20% of newborns suffering from neonatal conditions, including prematurity, neonatal sepsis, asphyxia among others.
The government of Japan has signed a contract with Baylor College of Medicine Children’s Foundation Uganda where Shs327 million has been given in form of a grant to be used for a grassroots human security project.
The money under the project is to be used to construct a new neonatal intensive care unit at Bwera Hospital. The unit will have 27 beds – comprised of a neonatal recovery room, incubator room, isolation room; kangaroo care room and a doctor’s office.
In a statement released by the Japanese embassy, the Ambassador of Japan to Uganda, Fukuzawa Hidemoto, Bwera is the only public hospital in Kasese district with 20% of newborns suffering from neonatal conditions, including prematurity, neonatal sepsis, asphyxia among others.
He said with the construction of the neonatal intensive care unit, Bwera hospital will have an improved neonatal environment in the district and thus contribute to reducing the neonatal mortality rate.
According to the embassy, the project is a program administered to support community-based development projects and was initiated in 1992.
The total number of projects supported under the scheme has reached 277 and it covers all parts of Uganda.
