Kitariko to lead new National Lotteries & Gaming Board inaugurated by finance minister
The Minister urged the new Board to focus on strengthening the regulatory framework to effectively address emerging trends such as online gaming and digital transactions.
Finance Minister Matia Kasaija on Monday officially inaugurated the new board members of the National Lotteries and Gaming Regulatory Board (NLGRB), tasking them with strengthening oversight of Uganda’s rapidly evolving gaming sector while ensuring responsible practices and sustained revenue generation.
The newly formed board will be chaired by Kenneth Kitariko. Other distinguished members include Assistant Commissioner of Police, Odong Mark Paul, Faridah Bahemuka Murungi, Esther Akullo, and William Blick.
In his remarks during the inauguration, Minister Kasaija underscored the government’s recognition of the gaming sector’s significant contribution, not only as a vital source of non-tax revenue but also in promoting responsible gaming, consumer protection, and economic formalization.
“This sector must be regulated in a manner that balances innovation, growth, and social safeguards,” Minister Kasaija stated. He emphasized the critical responsibility entrusted to the new board, noting their role in overseeing and guiding a sector that continues to evolve rapidly due to technological advancements, market trends, and societal impacts. “As stewards of the public trust, you are expected to uphold the highest standards of transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership,” he added.
The Minister urged the new Board to focus on strengthening the regulatory framework to effectively address emerging trends such as online gaming and digital transactions. He also stressed the importance of promoting responsible gaming practices and safeguarding the welfare of the public, particularly youth and vulnerable groups.
Minister Kasaija also took the opportunity to commend the outgoing Board, led by Mr. Aloysius Mugasa Adyeri, for its pivotal role in transforming what was once a chaotic sector into a modern, transparent, and credible regulatory body. “You have played your part in building an institution of national importance. As you exit, may you take pride in the milestones achieved under your leadership,” Kasaija remarked, acknowledging their significant contributions.
Responding to the Minister’s charge, the new Board Chairman, Kenneth Kitariko, expressed gratitude for the confidence placed in the new team. He pledged a leadership rooted in integrity, dialogue, and dedicated national service, committing to fulfill the mandate entrusted to them.
The inauguration marks a new chapter for the NLGRB as it seeks to navigate the complexities of the modern gaming landscape under its new leadership.
