Kumi district Deputy RDC halts construction of rice plant

Projects not monitored are projects wasted; today I monitored the construction of Kajamaka Rice Processing and Storage Plant, Nseko said in a statement.

The Kumi district Deputy Resident District Commissioner, Anthony Nseko, Friday morning stopped the construction of the Kajamaka Rice Processing and Storage Plant over shoddy work being done by the contractor.

The project under the LEGS program is located in Kajamaka parish, Kanyum Sub County, Kumi district.

Nseko revealed that upon inspection, he discovered that the contractor, Sanitation Africa Limited, was using aggregated concrete that is not as was quoted in the Bill Of Quantities (BoQs).

A BOQ is a document used in tendering in the construction industry in which materials, parts, and labor are itemized.

It also details the terms and conditions of the construction or repair contract and itemizes all work to enable a contractor to price the work for which he or she is bidding.

“I found works in progress at the site; however, the aggregated concrete which was being used wasn’t the one as quoted in the BOQs. This causes cracking of the wall hence poor works,” he explained his cause of action.

“I immediately halted works at the site until they get the specified aggregated concrete as quoted in BOQs and tasked the District Engineer (supervisor) to closely supervise and technically guide the contractor which is his role during the project implementation,” he added.

Many contractors across the country have come under scrutiny for doing shoddy work when contracted by local government. This has caused the government to lose a lot of money.
