Minister Kyofatogabye says Lukwago is misinforming Ugandans about inflating cost of civil works in Kampala
Kyofatogabye, while addressing members of the press at Uganda Media Centre on Thursday said the Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, is misinforming the public and is not informed about developments in the city.
The State Minister for Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs, Kabuye Kyofatogabye is irritated by Kampala City’s Lord Mayor’s allegations that cartels are obscenely inflating the cost of civil works in the country’s capital Kampala.
Kyofatogabye, while addressing members of the press at Uganda Media Centre on Thursday said the Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, is misinforming the public and is not informed about developments in the city.
The Minister in an effort to put right what Lukwago allegedly said wrongly said that not all the $ 288 million (Shs1 trillion) will go towards road construction but rather only $ 246.2 million.
He trashed the Lord Mayor’s allegation saying that pessimistic Lukwago lied and he was ready to debunk his falsehoods and restore hope to Ugandans.
Lukwago yesterday at a press conference said that only 69km of the roads were to cost shs1 trillion.
However, Kyofatogabye highlighted that part of the $246.2 million meant for the roads will be used to navigate through five kilometres of “stormy” drainage works, signalization of 11 junctions, installation of over 1500 street lights and 30 public toilets among other uses.
“Institutional support will take $3.6 million. Women and youth skill development will take $ 0.2 million. The other lots, like the planting of 10,000 trees, additional roads, were added onto the project,” the Minister said.
He added that $11 million has been earmarked for compensation and resettlement of the Project Affected Persons. “This total cost is $ 288 million and out of this, about $ 48 million is meant for other components of the project,” he said.
Kyofatogabye rectified that there was initially a component for the project to provide 50 eco-friendly buses but following the presidential directive on the construction of buses in Uganda, the procurement of eco-buses in Uganda was changed to the construction of roads.
The minister called upon the Lord Mayor to always do more consultation on issues before making any false information.
