MPs want police to account for money meant for cameras, patrol cars

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, directed the Minister of Internal Affairs to present a statement on the surveillance cameras.

Following the attack on Busika Police Post in Luwero District by yet-to-be-identified assailants, Members of Parliament (MPs) are asking police to account for money issued to them to cater for equipment like CCTV cameras and police patrol cars.

Speaking during plenary on Tuesday, Kampala Central MP, Mohammed Nsereko inquired about the efficacy of the surveillance cameras.

He said that police guns should have GPS trackers on them. “We need to embrace technology in security. We would have followed these assailants since they went away with the guns they used on the police officers,” Nsereko noted.

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Annet Among, directed the Minister of Internal Affairs to present a statement on the surveillance cameras. “How many were bought, where are they located, how much was spent, who were the suppliers,” she said.

She thereafter appealed to the government to ensure that there are adequate Police Patrol cars to respond to such instances.

The MP for Kira Municipality, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, said that whereas there is a need to have the budget for the Police increased, the funds that have been released must be accounted for.

A group of armed assailants, on Monday, shot and killed two police officers on duty, injured two others, one critically, and thereafter, robbed two police guns from them.

The police say the assailants who were about 7, emerged from 3 different sides, two in front and one from behind, and were armed with a pistol and guns.
