Mukono-Kampala railway upgrade to transform transport and boost economy
The upgraded railway can now accommodate speeds of up to 120 km/hour, a dramatic improvement from the previous 20–35 km/hour.
Uganda’s transport sector has received a major upgrade with the commissioning of the rehabilitated Mukono-Kampala meter gauge railway line, a development expected to significantly enhance the country’s business and economic landscape.
President Yoweri Museveni officially inaugurated the 26.8 km railway line, describing it as a critical component in rationalizing Uganda’s overburdened transport system.
“The revived economy has led to an influx of vehicles on the roads, creating congestion as everything—cargo, petroleum products, and passengers—is transported by road. This railway offers a rational solution,” he said.
The upgraded railway can now accommodate speeds of up to 120 km/hour, a dramatic improvement from the previous 20–35 km/hour. With its enhanced cargo capacity and faster speeds, the railway is set to revolutionize the transportation of goods and passengers.
Constructed with durable concrete sleepers manufactured by Imathia Construction in Kawolo, Lugazi, the commuter train currently serves up to 650 passengers per trip. It offers a reliable, cost-effective alternative for daily commuters, completing the Mukono-Kampala route in just 40 minutes.
Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, the Minister of Works and Transport, highlighted the importance of the railway in alleviating transportation challenges. “We initially introduced the commuter train as a trial.
With the upgraded line to Namanve, we saw the potential to run passenger services during peak hours, offering an affordable and efficient solution for those traveling in and out of Kampala,” he explained.
Since June 2024, over 220,000 passengers have used the Mukono-Kampala route, and the Uganda Railways Corporation plans to expand services to other routes, including Kampala-Kyengera and Kampala-Port Bell.
Al-Hajji Abdallahtifu Wangubo, Chairperson of the Uganda Railways Corporation Board, expressed gratitude for the government’s support.
“Under President Museveni’s leadership, we have witnessed transformative changes in transit infrastructure. Passenger demand has been overwhelming, and we hope to secure additional train coaches to meet this growing demand,” he said.
The revitalized railway is not just a transportation project—it’s a catalyst for economic growth. By facilitating faster and more efficient movement of goods, the railway is expected to boost trade, open new markets for Ugandan businesses, and increase export potential.
As Uganda continues to modernize its transport infrastructure, the Mukono-Kampala railway stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to sustainable economic development and improving the lives of its citizens.
