Museveni makes crucial decision regarding iron sheets scandal

Museveni has directed Uganda police along with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to carry out investigations into the alleged mishandling of relief items meant for the Karamoja region.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni through the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed Uganda police along with the State House Anti-Corruption Unit to carry out investigations into the alleged mishandling of relief items meant for the Karamoja region, which included iron sheets that were reported to have been disbursed to high profile leaders in government.

This has been revealed by police spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga who noted that investigations have kicked off and are continuing to pursue a joint led prosecution inquiry, especially into the alleged theft of iron sheets meant for Karamoja’s poor.

“The president directed for an expeditious inquiry into the allegations and this followed increased complaints from the intended beneficiaries and other concerned citizens,” said Enanga.

He further noted that the Criminal Investigations Division and the state house anti-corruption unit, will lead the investigations into the matter, and expand on the inquiries that have so far been conducted by parliament and IGG.

“We shall interact with concerned personalities to ensure an expeditious investigation. Now that we have a task force in place, we shall be giving progressive updates to members of the public on the investigations,” he explained.

This website has learnt that the State House investigators found during inquiries last month, that the branded iron sheets were handed out to various ministers, some of whose relatives were selling them leading to the arrest of minister Kitutu’s family members who have since been released.

Among the named beneficiaries are Vice President Jesca Alupo, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, her deputies Rebecca Kadaga and Rukia Nakadama, and Finance Minister Matia Kasaija

Other beneficiaries include the Government Chief Whip Hamson Obua and Bwino Kyagulaga, the junior Agriculture minister.

Ministers Kasaija and Kadaga have acknowledged receiving some iron sheets separately but said these were unsolicited.
