Museveni reappoints Byabakama as EC Chairperson
President Yoweri Museveni has reappointed Justice Simon Byabakama as Electoral Commission Chairperson.
On January 7,2023, members of the commission who included Byabakama, Hajjat Aisha Lubega(Deputy Chairperson), Justine Ahabwe, Stephen Tashobya, Nathaline Etomaru, Al-Haji M Sebaggala and James Peter Emorut completed their term of office, positions they were appointed to on January 7,2017.
Byabakama’s team presided over the 2021 general elections and had rolled out the 2026 general elections road map.
Hajjat Lubega has also secured reappointment as the EC Deputy Chairperson.
“In exercise of the Powers vested in the President by Article 60(1) of the 1995 Constitution, I have appointed persons listed below as Chairperson, Deputy Chairperson, and members of the Electoral Commission respectively,” reads a letter addressed to the Speaker Anita Among.
Other appointed members of the commission include Stephen Tashobya, Dr Sallie Simba Kayunga, Anthony Okello, Pamela Etonu Okudi and Robert Kasule Sebunya.
“I hereby, forward their names and CVs to Parliament for approval,” the letter reads in part.
Following this nomination, the nominees will be vetted by Parliament before their inauguration.
