National Voters’ Register Display exercise concludes; electoral commission offers no extension

Following the conclusion of the display exercise, the EC will now proceed to the next critical phase: the display of lists of individuals recommended for deletion or inclusion by the Tribunal.

The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced the conclusion of the Display of the National Voters’ Register, which commenced on April 25th, 2025, across most polling stations in the country. The exercise officially ended today, May 15th, 2025.

However, the EC clarified that the display will continue until May 20th, 2025, in 620 polling stations where the start of the exercise was delayed due to initial technical setbacks.

This phase of the process aimed to allow registered voters to verify their details and raise objections to the inclusion or removal of individuals from the register. The public was encouraged to report deceased individuals, those under the legal voting age of 18, those registered in the wrong parish, and individuals registered multiple times.

Simultaneously, the EC displayed lists of registered and verified Ugandan citizens who had not yet indicated their preferred polling stations, facilitating the assignment of polling locations for these individuals.

Next Steps: Display of Lists for Removal/Inclusion

Following the conclusion of the display exercise, the EC will now proceed to the next critical phase: the display of lists of individuals recommended for deletion or inclusion by the Tribunal. This display will take place at each respective parish/ward headquarters for a period of ten days, from May 16th to May 26th, 2025.

“The purpose of this exercise is to enable any person who may have been wrongly recommended for deletion to raise an objection to the Parish/Ward Tribunal,” stated the EC in their press release.

The Parish/Ward Tribunal, appointed by the magistrate of the area and comprising elders and representatives from political parties, will consider and make the final decision regarding recommendations for inclusion, deletion, or correction.

Finalizing the Register for 2025/2026 Elections

After the Parish Tribunal process, all data will be collected and processed by the Electoral Commission to create the final National Voters Register for the 2025/2026 General Elections.

The Commission also reminded the public that registered voters can still access and confirm their voting details on the Electoral Commission website: https://ec.or.ug/register.

Addressing Complaints and Moving Forward

Any complaints arising from the Display Exercise should be addressed to the Returning Officers of the respective Electoral Districts, in accordance with Article 61(1)(f) of the Constitution and Section 15 of the Electoral Commission Act.

The EC thanked stakeholders for their support in mobilizing the public to participate in the Display of the Register and urged continued participation in all scheduled electoral activities. The Commission is aiming to have the final National Voters Register ready in time for the first cycle of elections – those of Special Interest Groups (SIGs) Committees (Youths, Persons with Disability, and Older Persons) – which are scheduled for June 2025.
