NGOs blamed for rising homosexuality in schools
The MPs said many NGOs in the country are not being monitored and the government doesn’t know what they really do in the country.
Former education minister in charge of sports, Charles Bakkabulindi, says that some Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) are involved in the promotion of homosexual (LGBTQ) activities in schools.
“These NGOs use teachers in these big schools to recruit the students into these activities. We need to curb this,” Bakkabulindi told Parliament plenary Tuesday afternoon.
Another MP, Ronald Afidra Olema, called on Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) to step up the control of content on television.
“The TV stations especially through the cartoon channels are showing material promoting same sex. They need to be on board in curbing this vice,” he said.
The MPs said many NGOs in the country are not being monitored and the government doesn’t know what they really do in the country. They said some of these NGOs are recruiting students into homosexuality.
Sarah Opendi (Tororo district) said Parliament must provide leadership in the fight against LGBTQ activities.
“We should not shy away from this; we have a motion which we want in this House and we come up with recommendations on how to move forward,” she said.
“The Police and the Judiciary, and this Parliament, must stand firm against this vice. Even in this Parliament, we have people who are sympathetic to these people and I will name you here,” she added.
The MPs were reacting to an issue that was raised by Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa regarding the rising reports of gay and lesbian activities in secondary schools.
“These schools are now recruitment centres; some of these children and their parents are dying in silence. We need the Committee on Education to look into this matter and find solutions.
This cannot go on like this. Some of the boys in a certain school fear moving in the night for fear of being sodomised,” the deputy speaker informed Parliament.
