NUP council speakers demonstrating at parliament roughly arrested
National Unity Platform secretary general, David Lewis Rubongoya, said the arrested councillors were protesting against the continuing abductions, illegal detention and trial in military courts of NUP supporters.
Police in Kampala has arrested five council speakers from Wakiso and Kampala who stormed Parliament with a petition demanding that legislators intervene and secure the release of several political prisoners.
According to police, the group which has been led by Wakiso District Speaker, Najja Nasif, was arrested because they did not follow the proper procedure to hold a demonstration or to deliver a petition to parliament.
The speakers included Nassif Najja (Wakiso), Justus Akampurira (Kawempe), Hamza Kasozi (Nansana), Charles Luba (Makindye) and Godfrey Luyombya (Nakawa).
National Unity Platform secretary general, David Lewis Rubongoya, said the arrested councillors were protesting against the continuing abductions, illegal detention and trial in military courts of NUP supporters.
He confirmed that four of them had been violently arrested and were being detained at Central Police Station (CPS) in Kampala.
They also risk becoming political prisoners for trying to protest against the mistreatment of political prisoners, he noted.
