Police have intensified security at churches as the country draws close to the annual Easter holiday. The Easter weekend will commence with Good Friday celebrations on 7th April 2023 and climax with Easter Monday.

There is anticipation that the number of people travelling to their hometowns and villages for the Easter Holiday will increase. This, security sources said, might prove to be a security threat as people move from one place to another.

And for that matter, security personnel presence has been increased at all worshipping centres.

Police Spokesperson, Fred Enanga, explained that different people around the country will be shopping, holding parties and carrying out thanksgiving.

“So we expect an increase in crimes; as well as other threats to public safety especially robbery, fraud, bag snatching and livestock theft,” he noted.

Although the week leading to the Easter holiday has begun without any specific threats directed towards the Easter celebrations, Enanga said police are actively monitoring the situation to ensure there is no credible threat in the country.

He said they have increased foot and car patrols, and other security interventions targeting the Easter holiday are being put in place.

“Going forward, we have partnered with religious leaders. We have stressed the importance of community vigilance at their respective churches.

“We have asked them to review their security measures, and contingency plans as far as protecting the church,” said Enanga.

According to police, some criminal gangs have been targeting churches. The gangs were stealing mostly electronic gadgets. This has prompted police to call upon church leaders to strengthen their vigilance around churches.

Police have additionally called upon the general public to plan their journeys earlier to avoid causing accidents ahead of this rash hour period of Easter.

Police have also warned criminals planning to destabilize the country that the force is well prepared.
