President Museveni meets Matthias Schauer amidst First Son’s inspired protest against the German ambassador
On the very same day as the meeting, members of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political organization closely aligned with Museveni's son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, staged a protest outside the German embassy in Kololo.

President Yoweri Museveni held a strategic meeting with the German Ambassador to Uganda, His Excellency Matthias Schauer, on Friday, June 13th, 2025, at State Lodge, Nakasero.
The meeting, as described in a press statement from the president’s team, centered on bolstering collaboration between Uganda and Germany across various sectors, including trade, investment, technology, and sports development.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the longstanding partnership, with Museveni emphasizing the importance of mutual respect and shared development goals, highlighting Uganda’s dedication to sustainable progress.
Ambassador Schauer expressed gratitude for the warm reception and voiced his optimism about the future growth of Uganda-Germany relations.
However, this display of diplomatic cordiality occurred against a backdrop of brewing tension, adding another layer of complexity to the relationship.

On the very same day as the meeting, members of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a political organization closely aligned with Museveni’s son, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, staged a protest outside the German embassy in Kololo.
This demonstration stemmed from a reported fallout between Gen. Muhoozi and Ambassador Schauer, with Muhoozi and his supporters accusing the ambassador of engaging in “subversive activities.”
The protestors, clad in t-shirts emblazoned with Gen. Muhoozi’s image, marched from the PLU headquarters in Naguru to the embassy on Philip Drive.
Their placards and chants, including slogans like “The colonial era ended” and “The ambassador must go,” clearly signaled their displeasure and demanded the ambassador’s removal.
The timing of the protest, coinciding with the high-level meeting between President Museveni and Ambassador Schauer, raises several pertinent questions about the state of Uganda-Germany relations and the internal dynamics of Ugandan politics.
