REVIEW: Apple unveils iPhone 16 with fresh colors, new features, and upgraded design

The most notable design change is the new vertically-aligned camera bump on the back, housing a 48-megapixel primary lens and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens.

Apple has officially launched the iPhone 16, bringing a vibrant array of colors, a redesigned camera setup, and several new buttons to its latest smartphone.

First, the colors: they’re fun and refreshing, with shades like Ultra Marine (a unique blend of blues that Apple insists isn’t just “blue”), Pink, and Teal, all adding a lively twist to the iPhone’s palette. While these colors may delight most users, Pro users might feel left out, as Black and White remain the more neutral shades.

The most notable design change is the new vertically-aligned camera bump on the back, housing a 48-megapixel primary lens and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens. This new arrangement allows the iPhone 16 to capture spatial video for playback on the Vision Pro, adding a whole new dimension to the device’s camera capabilities.

On the sides, Apple has introduced an “Action Button,” now available on standard iPhones, sitting just above the volume rocker. Much like the customizable features of iOS 18, this button can be programmed to perform various functions — from unlocking your car to playing a specific song, or even launching a custom shortcut. It’s a versatile addition that many users will appreciate.

Another new feature is the “Camera Control” button on the left side. Positioned perfectly for horizontal use, it mimics the design of a traditional camera button. A single click opens the camera, another takes the photo, and with a swipe, you can zoom in or out. A light press brings up different shooting modes and effects. It’s a tactile, multifunctional button that feels intuitive and exciting to use.

Aside from these changes, the iPhone 16 retains much of the design language of the iPhone 15. Its aluminum build gives it a sturdy feel without adding weight. The front features a 6.1-inch OLED display, vibrant and crisp, though still capped at a 60Hz refresh rate. If you’re accustomed to a 120Hz screen, this might feel less smooth, but for those who aren’t, it should still offer a satisfying experience. The Dynamic Island feature remains at the top, enabling various Live Activities.

Performance-wise, the iPhone 16 is powered by the new Apple A18 chip, ensuring plenty of speed for daily tasks and upcoming Apple Intelligence features. During my brief hands-on time, the device felt snappy and responsive, from opening apps to experimenting with its new buttons and even playing a few games.

It’s worth noting that the iPhone 16 will ship with iOS 18, but Apple Intelligence features like Writing Tools and Photo Cleanup won’t be available until iOS 18.1 rolls out in October.

Overall, it’s a powerful smartphone with some fresh design tweaks and extra features, while still maintaining the familiar build and experience of its predecessor. The new colors are a delightful change, and there’s plenty to be curious about as Apple continues to innovate.

Apple announced the iPhone 16 at the “It’s Glowtime” event on Monday, September 9.

Preorders start on Friday, September 9, and the phone will hit stores on Friday, September 20.
