Speaking to Mr. Peter Musoke, a digital marketing expert, states, “Brands in Uganda and beyond are increasingly recognizing the value of influencer marketing. Influencers on X have the power to shape opinions and drive consumer behavior, making them valuable partners for marketing campaigns.”

According to X, affiliate marketing is another avenue through which people are making money on X. By sharing affiliate links to products and services, users earn a commission on sales generated through their links. Additionally, sponsored tweets, where companies pay users to tweet about their products or services, have become a common practice.

Musoke emphasized this by saying that, “Affiliate marketing and sponsored tweets provide an easy way for people to earn money. It requires relatively low investment and can be highly effective if you have a dedicated following.”

Crowd funding and soliciting donations are also popular on X, especially for creatives such as artists, musicians, and writers. By sharing their work and engaging with their audience, these creatives can receive financial support from their followers.

Research reveals that platforms like Patreon and Ko-fi, often linked through X, facilitate this exchange, allowing followers to support their favorite creators directly.

Economic impact and challenges

While X offers significant earning potential, it also presents challenges. The platform’s algorithms and policies constantly evolve, requiring users to adapt quickly to maintain their visibility and engagement.

Additionally, the digital divide in Uganda, with inconsistent internet access and digital literacy levels, can hinder the ability of some to fully exploit these opportunities.

According to the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), there has been a steady increase in internet penetration, currently at 52%, which bodes well for the future of digital entrepreneurship in the country.
