Rwanda cuts diplomatic ties with Belgium over ‘neocolonial delusions’

This move marks a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations, whose relationship has long been shaped by Belgium’s colonial past in Rwanda. It remains to be seen how Brussels will respond to the abrupt severance of ties.

The Government of Rwanda has formally severed diplomatic relations with Belgium, citing the European country’s alleged interference and “neocolonial delusions.”

In a strongly worded statement issued today, Rwanda accused Belgium of persistently undermining its sovereignty, particularly in relation to the ongoing conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Kigali claims Belgium has “taken sides” in the regional crisis and has worked systematically to mobilize international hostility against Rwanda.

“Belgium has consistently acted against Rwanda, both historically and in the present conflict in the DRC,” the statement read. “Its attempts to manipulate narratives and destabilize Rwanda are unacceptable.”

Rwanda also condemned Belgium for what it called a long-standing role in fueling ethnic extremism, contributing to the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Additionally, Kigali accused Brussels of harboring groups that promote genocide denial and perpetuate divisive ideologies.

The diplomatic rift takes immediate effect, with Rwanda ordering all Belgian diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours. The Rwandan government assured that it would adhere to the Vienna Convention by safeguarding Belgian diplomatic premises, property, and archives in Kigali.
