On Thursday 17th November 2022, at around 9 pm, Gaddafi barracks was attacked by armed assailants who killed a UPDF officer identified as Sgt. Eyamu Simon Peter, aged 45, and robbed two guns, including that of his colleague who had gone to the nearby shops.

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) spokesperson Brig Gen Felix Kulayigye in a statement revealed that Sgt Eyamu’s colleague, L/Cpl Kibirige Norico, had gone to the shop to buy some drinks.

The facts gathered according to police indicate that the assailants took advantage of the location of the mini-check point distanced about 1km away from the main checkpoint to Gaddafi barracks, the green cover and the Amber coat market access which made the mini-check point a soft target.

According to Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, the assailants attacked the guard, stabbed him in the right chest and also shot him thrice, killing him instantly. They then robbed two guns and fled from the scene.

He added that the security barricade at the main Gaddafi barracks checkpoint was not breached.

An immediate search, with the use of K9, led to the arrest of one suspect who was found hiding in a trench. The second UPDF guard, who left his beat at the mini-checkpoint, is also arrested for further interrogation,” he said.

Additionally, Enanga said they deployed full investigative resources to reconstruct and document the scene. He explains that intelligence and operational teams are also building on their intelligence, aimed at identifying and pursuing the assailants.

“The body of the deceased has been transferred to Jinja Regional Referral hospital for further post-mortem analysis. Our condolences are extended to the family, friends, relatives and workmates of the late Sgt. Eyamu Simon Peter,” he noted.
