Team appointed to assess damage caused by heavy rains in Kigezi

Environmentalists have over the years urged residents in such areas to vacate.

The Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, reveals that the cabinet on Monday agreed to formulate a team to assess the damage caused by heavy rainfall in the Kigezi Sub-Region and Ntoroko district where at least 23 people have been reported dead.

The minister didn’t say when this team will be actioned and who will be on it.

It has been learned that the victims of the heavy rains will be extended with relief support and resources required to fix the destroyed infrastructure.

“Cabinet has once again appealed to those settled on high-risk slopes to relocate to less risky areas. Families that lost loved ones due to heavy rains shall receive five million shillings each from President Museveni,” he added.

Kigezi Sub-region is prone to floods, landslides and mudslides because it usually receives heavy rainfall amounts. Some of the disasters are usually recorded between January and May because of the rainy season.
