UBOS trains technical team ahead of aquaculture census
UBOS said they are working to generate reliable and quality aquaculture statistics for informed planning. We call upon all stakeholders and the general public to support and cooperate with our data collectors, UBOS stated.

A technical team that will serve as trainers of trainees during the aquaculture census 2025 to be conducted by Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has been undergoing six days of training at Jinja Nile Resort Hotel. The training that started on Thursday, 24th April 2025, is part of the preparation of the aquaculture census, a data collection exercise.
The Bureau is working closely with the local government officials, especially the district planners and district fishery officers, to ensure complete coverage of all aquaculture establishments (farms) across the country.
UBOS said they are working to generate reliable and quality aquaculture statistics for informed planning. We call upon all stakeholders and the general public to support and cooperate with our data collectors, UBOS stated.
This May, UBOS, together with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, is set to conduct the Uganda Aquaculture Census 2025. The census will generate critical information on the number of aquaculture farms, production levels, technologies, and types of aquaculture systems in use, socio-economic data on operators, and environmental impact on aquaculture.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aquaculture, or aquafarming, refers to the farming of aquatic organisms, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, and aquatic plants. A UBOS report in 2024 stated that fishing contributed 1.9% to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and 7.6% to agricultural GDP for the year 2023/24.
