Uganda Airlines to acquire Boeing freighters to boost agricultural exports
Revived in 2019 after a 20-year hiatus, Uganda Airlines has been working to expand its operations and reestablish its presence in the regional aviation industry.
Uganda Airlines announced plans to enhance its cargo operations with the acquisition of two Boeing freighters, a B737-800(BCF) and a B777-F.
This strategic move, approved by the Ugandan cabinet, aims to support the country’s thriving agricultural export sector.
Revived in 2019 after a 20-year hiatus, Uganda Airlines has been working to expand its operations and reestablish its presence in the regional aviation industry.
The purchase of these freighters aligns with its broader growth strategy, which includes acquiring six additional passenger aircraft—four Airbus A320-200neo and two Boeing 787 Dreamliners.
Uganda’s agricultural export sector, valued at over $1 billion annually, has seen significant growth, particularly in fresh produce such as flowers, fruits, and vegetables destined for Europe and the Middle East.
The new freighters are expected to enhance the efficiency and reliability of transporting these perishable goods to international markets.
The expansion is poised to create jobs and stimulate economic growth while bolstering Uganda’s position as a key player in regional trade. Uganda Airlines expects to take delivery of the freighters in the coming months.
