Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei in ICU after attack by ex-boyfriend

Local police stated that Cheptegei was rescued by neighbors after being set on fire in the small town of Endebess.

Ugandan athlete Rebecca Cheptegei, who suffered severe burns covering 75% of her body, is currently in the ICU at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret, Kenya, following an alleged attack by a former boyfriend.

According to reports, Cheptegei was doused with petrol by the suspect, Dickson Ndiema Marangach, during a dispute over a piece of land. Marangach, who also sustained serious burns, is admitted to the same ICU. The local authorities have confirmed the ongoing investigation into the incident.

Dr. Owen Menach, the hospital’s acting CEO, has confirmed the admission of both individuals to the ICU and is expected to provide an update on their condition.

The 33-year-old marathon runner, who competed in the recent Paris Olympics, was reportedly attacked at her home in western Kenya, where she had been training.

Local police stated that Cheptegei was rescued by neighbors after being set on fire in the small town of Endebess.

“The couple was heard quarrelling outside their house. During the altercation, the boyfriend was seen pouring a liquid on the woman before setting her alight,” said Jeremiah ole Kosiom, a local police chief.

Cheptegei finished 44th in the marathon at the recent Paris Olympics.
