Ugandan military kills 5 ADF rebels in eastern DR Congo

The Ugandan military said Friday that it killed five Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Col. Deo Akiiki, Uganda’s deputy military spokesperson, said Uganda People Defense Forces (UPDF) troops ambushed the rebels in Ituri province on Thursday.

“UPDF put up a deadly ambush against ADF in eastern DRC, putting out of action five ADF fighters, recovering four SMGs (submachine guns), several rounds of ammunitions, improvised explosive devices and communication equipment in Ituri province,” Akiiki said in a statement.
The spokesperson shared pictures of deceased ADF rebels and recovered equipment.

Ugandan troops, together with their DRC counterparts, launched joint attacks on the rebel group in November 2022.

The ADF, also a branch of the Islamic State in central Africa, has been holed up in the jungles of eastern DRC.
The rebel group is blamed for causing havoc and mounting attacks in North Kivu and Ituri provinces in eastern DRC.
