We’re embarking on a long walk to freedom – Bobi Wine to Uganda after presidential nomination

The NUP leader is expected to once again advocate for democratic reforms and an end to long-standing political rule in Uganda.

Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, the prominent leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), has officially been nominated as a presidential candidate for Uganda’s 2026 general elections.

His nomination, which occurred on the second day of the nomination exercise, makes him the third candidate confirmed today and the sixth overall to enter the presidential race, having successfully met all legal requirements under the Presidential Elections Act, Cap 179.

Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known by his stage name Bobi Wine, addressed supporters and the media shortly after his nomination, reflecting on past electoral challenges and articulating his vision for the future.

“This is not the first time we stand before you with a dream of a new Uganda,” Kyagulanyi stated. “I know many are asking, why do we go to the polls again? We’re embarking on a long walk to freedom.” His remarks underscored a persistent determination despite previous electoral outcomes, signaling a continued fight for political change.

However, the nomination process also came with a directive from the Electoral Commission (EC). Justice Simon Byabakama, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, requested Kyagulanyi to submit his comprehensive campaign roadmap to the Commission by September 29. This date officially marks the commencement of election campaigns across the country.

Justice Byabakama explained that the submission of campaign schedules is crucial for the EC to harmonize activities with other nominated candidates.

This measure aims to prevent clashes in campaign routes and venues, ensuring an organized and peaceful electoral process for all participants.

Kyagulanyi, a former pop star turned politician, has emerged as a significant opposition figure in Uganda, drawing substantial support from the youth demographic.

His nomination sets the stage for another highly anticipated electoral contest, solidifying his position as a key challenger in the upcoming polls.

The NUP leader is expected to once again advocate for democratic reforms and an end to long-standing political rule in Uganda.
