Mugisha Muntu nominated as ANT presidential candidate for 2026, emphasizes justice and transformation

A former Commander of the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) and a founding member and former president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Muntu broke away to form the ANT in 2019.

Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Mugisha Muntu Oyera was officially nominated today as the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) party’s presidential candidate, setting the stage for his bid in Uganda’s 2026 general elections.

Muntu, a veteran politician known for his emphasis on institutional building and principled leadership, became the second candidate nominated on the second day of the process and the fifth overall to formally enter the presidential race.

The nomination marks a significant step for Muntu and the ANT as they gear up for the next electoral cycle. Addressing supporters and the media following his nomination, Muntu reiterated his commitment to systemic change over personal ambition, a philosophy that has defined his political journey.

“I keep telling people, even if I don’t become president of this country, if I can build and collaborate with like-minded people to create a political vehicle that can transform this country, I will go to heaven as happy as if I had become president,” Muntu stated.

His words stressed a long-held belief in the power of strong institutions, collaborative governance, and a vision for Uganda that transcends individual office.

He further stressed the importance of substantive peace in national development, drawing a clear distinction from a mere absence of conflict. “Peace is not the absence of war; peace is the presence of justice,” Muntu declared, signaling his campaign’s focus on equitable governance, rule of law, and accountability.

Muntu’s nomination adds a seasoned voice to the growing field of presidential aspirants. A former Commander of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) and a founding member and former president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Muntu broke away to form the ANT in 2019.

His move was predicated on a belief in nurturing strong political structures and a civil, methodical approach to opposition politics, often contrasting with the more confrontational tactics favored by some other opposition figures.

As the 2026 general election draws closer, Muntu’s entry signals a continued push for what he describes as a generational mission to establish democratic norms and a government accountable to its citizens.

His campaign is expected to highlight themes of national healing, good governance, and the creation of a more just and equitable society, aligning with the core tenets of the Alliance for National Transformation.

With his official nomination secured, Maj. Gen. (Rtd) Muntu is poised to embark on a campaign that will likely emphasize his vision for a transformed Uganda, built on the foundations of justice and strong, democratic institutions. His message of long-term nation-building will now be put to the test as the country gears up for the next electoral cycle.
