Why CHAN 2024 was postponed to August 2025

To maintain momentum, the official draw for the tournament will proceed as planned on January 15, 2025, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, originally slated for February 2024, to August 2025.

The decision, announced on Tuesday, January 14, followed a comprehensive evaluation of infrastructure readiness in the host nations Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Despite significant progress in constructing and upgrading stadiums, training fields, hotels, and other critical facilities, CAF’s technical and infrastructure experts determined that more time was needed to meet the required standards for hosting a successful continental tournament.

“CAF Technical and Infrastructure experts, some of whom have been based in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, have advised that additional time is required to ensure that the infrastructure and facilities are at the levels necessary for hosting a successful TotalEnergies African Nations Championship,” read part of the official statement.

CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe commended the efforts of the host nations’ presidents William Ruto of Kenya, Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, and Yoweri Museveni of Uganda for their leadership and commitment to the tournament. He expressed confidence that the additional time would ensure all facilities meet the highest standards by August 2025.

To maintain momentum, the official draw for the tournament will proceed as planned on January 15, 2025, at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi.

The draw will feature prominent East African football icons Hassan Wasswa (Uganda), McDonald Mariga (Kenya), and Mrisho Ngasa (Tanzania), who will determine the groupings for the rescheduled competition.

CAF assured fans and stakeholders that the exact tournament dates and logistical details for August 2025 would be announced soon. The postponement aims to ensure a world-class event that showcases the best domestic talent while contributing to the growth of football across Africa.

The CHAN 2024 tournament, reserved for players competing in their national leagues, is expected to become a landmark event, spotlighting local talent and strengthening the football infrastructure in East Africa.
