1,690 motorcycles impounded in 3 days over lack of licences
Statistics from Uganda police indicate that 50, 000 boda boda riders operate on the road without required qualifications as streamlined by the Traffic and Road safety Act 1998.
A total of 1,690 motorcycles were impounded by police between Thursday 12th to Saturday 14th of this month following an operation by traffic police to curb riders without riding licences and crash helmets.
After the three-day ultimatum given to boda boda riders last week to process driving licenses and procure crash helmets, traffic police on Thursday 12th commenced operations where boda boda riders were arrested.
According to Faridah Nampiima, the Traffic police spokesperson, those arrested without permits are issued an EPS ticket immediately worth Shs40, 000 and once it’s cleared a rider is given back their motorcycle to go and process a driving license.
She added that for some of the riders who abandoned their motorcycles and ran away, the owners of those motorcycles were issued an EPS ticket worthy Shs100, 000 for allowing someone to operate on the road without a license.
“From 12th to 14th January for the region of Kampala Metropolitan South, we impounded 970 motorcycles, 695 issued EPS tickets, we didn’t caution any, 65 produced their licenses and were given back their motorcycles whereas 210 are now pending at police stations,” she noted.
In other parts of Kampala, Nampiima noted that 212 motorcycles were impounded in Kampala East, while in Kampala north 508 were impounded.
