UBOS to reveal final 2024 census results next week
In June, UBOS shared preliminary results showing a sharp population increase, with Uganda’s population now standing at 45.9 million—an 11.3 million rise since 2014.
The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) will unveil the much-awaited final report of the 2024 National Population and Housing Census on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Kampala Serena Hotel.
The event, starting at 9:00 am, will be broadcast live on television, radio, and social media, ensuring nationwide access.
In June, UBOS shared preliminary results showing a sharp population increase, with Uganda’s population now standing at 45.9 million—an 11.3 million rise since 2014. This rapid growth emphasizes the urgent need for strategic planning and resource distribution to meet the country’s growing demands.
Key demographic findings include a predominantly youthful population, with females representing 51% of the total and youth (18-30 years) accounting for 22.7%. Notably, over half the population (50.5%) is under 17, underscoring a young nation with vast potential for future development.
Urbanization trends were also highlighted in the preliminary report, with Kampala leading as the most populated city during the day, followed by Mbarara, Gulu, Masaka, and Hoima.
Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, UBOS Executive Director and Census Commissioner, stressed the importance of the census data for evidence-based planning and decision-making. He noted that the census would update Uganda’s geographical data down to village level, making it publicly accessible through district and city portals.
The 2024 census, conducted from May 10 to 26, marked a technological milestone as the first in Uganda to use digital tools for data collection. With 135,230 field workers involved, the digital approach ensured improved efficiency and accuracy.
Despite some challenges, such as hard-to-reach areas and respondent refusals, Dr. Mukiza commended the dedication of field staff and announced the next steps: a post-enumeration survey to verify data quality, followed by in-depth analysis and publication of final results.
Grateful for the support from government, partners, and the public, Dr. Mukiza reiterated UBOS’s commitment to producing high-quality statistics for Uganda’s development. “We are dedicated to serving the country with accurate and reliable data,” he stated.
