Museveni: Gen. Moses Ali rejected Idi Amin’s brutality, chose freedom struggle
The President thanked Gen. Ali for his dedicated service to Uganda and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and the people of West Nile.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Monday joined mourners at Parliament to pay his last respects to the late Gen. Moses Ali, describing the veteran politician and military officer as a patriot who made a significant contribution to Uganda’s history.
The President laid a wreath on Gen. Ali’s coffin during an official tribute attended by leaders, family members and mourners from across the country.
In his message, Museveni hailed Gen. Ali for rejecting the excesses of Idi Amin’s regime and joining the struggle that ushered in the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government.
“He made an important contribution to Uganda’s history. He rejected the brutality of Idi Amin’s regime, worked with us in the struggle for freedom, promoted peace and remained committed to the development of West Nile,” Museveni said.
The President noted that Gen. Ali devoted much of his public life to fostering stability and championing development in the West Nile sub-region, where he served in various leadership positions over several decades.
Museveni emphasized that lasting development can only be achieved in an environment of peace, saying the late Gen. Ali understood the close relationship between security and economic transformation.
“Gen. Ali understood that peace and development go together,” the President said.
He appealed to leaders in West Nile and across Uganda to honour the late statesman’s legacy by focusing on improving household incomes and advancing socio-economic transformation.
“I therefore appeal to the leaders in West Nile and the whole country that they should continue working hard to raise household incomes and achieve prosperity,” Museveni added.
The President thanked Gen. Ali for his dedicated service to Uganda and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and the people of West Nile.
“I thank him for his service to Uganda and pray that his soul rests in eternal peace,” Museveni said.
Gen. Moses Ali, one of Uganda’s longest-serving political leaders, held several senior government positions during his public career, including First Deputy Prime Minister.
His death has drawn tributes from leaders across the political divide, who have described him as a key figure in Uganda’s political and military history.
