Why gov’t has extended LC1, LC2 leaders’ term of office
The extension aims to provide sufficient time for the government to prepare for the next administrative activities, including elections, while maintaining stability in local governance structures.
The Ministry of Local Government has extended the term of office for administrative unit councils, including Local Council I (LC1) and Local Council II (LC2) leaders, for an additional period of up to 180 days.
In a notice, Minister of Local Government Hon. Raphael Magyezi confirmed that the term, set to expire on December 30, 2024, will now continue to ensure uninterrupted leadership and governance at the grassroots level.
“Notice is hereby given to the general public, pursuant to Regulation 12(d) of the Local Government Councils Regulations, that the term of office for administrative unit councils expiring on 30th December 2024, is extended for a period not exceeding one hundred and eighty days from 31st December 2024,” the statement read.
The extension aims to provide sufficient time for the government to prepare for the next administrative activities, including elections, while maintaining stability in local governance structures.
This announcement, outlined in General Notice No. 2827 of 2024 under the Local Governments Act, Cap. 138, follows previous delays in LC1 and LC2 elections. In July 2024, the government postponed the elections for a third time within a year, citing financial constraints and a need for Shs50 billion to conduct the polls.
The current LC1 and LC2 leaders were last elected in 2018, representing over 70,000 villages and 10,000 parishes nationwide. While the extension ensures continuity, the government is expected to provide further details on the roadmap for holding the elections in the coming months.
