Why Gen Muhoozi deleted his X account
In a farewell message to his over 1 million followers, Gen Muhoozi reflected on a decade-long journey on the platform, where his posts often sparked public debate.
Uganda’s First Son and Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has deactivated his account on X (formerly Twitter), citing a renewed focus on his military duties and divine guidance.
In a farewell message to his over 1 million followers, Gen Muhoozi reflected on a decade-long journey on the platform, where his posts often sparked public debate.
He explained his decision to step away, saying, “The time has now come under the instructions and blessings of my Lord Jesus Christ to leave and concentrate on His army, the UPDF.”
Gen Muhoozi’s time on X was marked by candid commentary on Ugandan politics, regional affairs, and Pan-African unity, as well as controversial statements that drew both praise and criticism.
His October 2022 tweet claiming Uganda’s army could capture Nairobi in two weeks led to diplomatic tensions and an official apology from President Museveni. He also threatened to expel U.S. Ambassador William Popp from Uganda, escalating tensions with Washington. More recently, his remarks about seizing Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, added to his list of provocative statements.
Despite these controversies, Muhoozi also used X to advocate for regional cooperation, peace, and dialogue, earning him support among Pan-Africanists.
This isn’t the first time Gen Muhoozi has announced his departure from X, having previously deactivated his account only to return. Supporters speculate this latest exit may be strategic, aligning with his growing political and military profile.
While Gen Muhoozi assured followers of a potential return, saying, “At an appropriate time in the future… we shall always re-converge,” his current focus is on fulfilling what he described as “the Almighty God’s immediate assignment to restore everlasting peace and security” in the region.
His departure has left fans divided, with some expressing disappointment and others viewing it as a calculated step in his career.
For now, Gen Muhoozi’s offline actions will be closely watched as his promise of a “greater comeback” continues to fuel speculation about his ambitions and influence.
