Why hunger strike instead of demanding a quick trial?Museveni tells Besigye
Museveni argued that a prompt trial is crucial to establish the truth and prevent instability.

President Yoweri Museveni has weighed in on the detention of Dr. Kizza Besigye, emphasizing that the focus should not be on why he was arrested but rather on why he is not demanding a swift trial to prove his innocence.
“If you want a stable country, the more correct question should be: ‘Naye Dr. Besigye bamukwatila ki?’ Why was Dr. Besigye arrested?” Museveni stated. “The answer to that is a quick trial so that facts come out. Otherwise, you are promoting insecurity which is very dangerous for the country.”
Museveni argued that a prompt trial is crucial to establish the truth and prevent instability. He underscored Uganda’s doctrine of accountability, stating that those responsible for crimes—especially those involving the loss of Ugandan lives—must be held responsible.
“We are not for vengeance, but the danger of the killers must be removed,” he said. “Therefore, the correct answer in the matter of Dr. Besigye is a quick trial.”resident also reflected on Uganda’s history, crediting freedom fighters for defeating Idi Amin and restoring peace.
“We are now able to remember Janani Luwum, Benedicto Kiwanuka, Kiingo Chemonges, Edward Mutesa, etc., moving through a peaceful Uganda and traveling on good tarmac roads because the freedom fighters sacrificed themselves,” he noted.
Regarding Besigye’s trial, Museveni explained that gaps in the Military Courts led to the transfer of his case to Civilian Courts. He assured that efforts are underway to strengthen Military Court procedures and close existing loopholes.
Addressing concerns about Besigye’s health, Museveni stated that prison hospitals are equipped to handle his needs and that his personal doctors have been allowed to visit.
However, he attributed Besigye’s frailty to his hunger strike, dismissing it as “unprincipled blackmail” meant to secure bail rather than pursue a trial.
“How can you be accused of serious crimes and then respond with a hunger strike to generate sympathy for bail?” Museveni questioned. “Why don’t you demand a quick trial? The military court was ready. Let us wait for the civilian court.”
