Bobi Wine protests dismissal of Kyambogo University Guild President over insubordination and breach of peace

According to a letter dated July 3, 2025, from the office of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaka (PhD), Akiso appeared before the Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee to answer to the charges.

Benjamin Akiso, the outspoken Guild President of Kyambogo University, has been dismissed from the institution with immediate effect following a disciplinary hearing and a subsequent decision by the University Council.

The dismissal, which has sparked significant debate, stems from allegations of breach of peace, mounting roadblocks, and insubordination to university authorities, all cited as violations of the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations 2003 as amended in 2016.

According to a letter dated July 3, 2025, from the office of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dr. Eli Katunguka-Rwakishaka (PhD), Akiso appeared before the Students’ Affairs and Welfare Committee to answer to the charges.

The committee, after reviewing the matter, recommended dismissal. This recommendation was subsequently reviewed and approved by the University Council at its 111th meeting held on June 27, 2025. The Council invoked Regulations 37(m) and 41 of the Kyambogo University Students’ Regulations 2003 (as amended in 2016) to justify the severe disciplinary action.

The letter explicitly outlines the prohibitions placed on Akiso: he is barred from attending academic and extracurricular activities, using any university facilities, or representing the Kyambogo University Students’ Guild or the University in any capacity.

The specific details regarding the incidents that led to the charges against Akiso remain officially undisclosed by the university. The University administration has yet to release further comment on the matter, beyond the dismissal letter.

However, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), Akiso offered his version of events, asserting the reason for his dismissal. “My ‘crime’ was advocating for students who’ve completed 70% of their tuition to be allowed to sit exams and for the management to waive off the 50k late payment fee imposed on students who don’t clear tuition within the first six weeks of the semester,” he stated.

The dismissal has also drawn a strong reaction from the political sphere. The President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), the political party to which Akiso subscribes, lauded Akiso for his resilience amidst the ordeal. “You did not commit any crime for standing up for justice and fairness. History will be kind to you,” the NUP President remarked. He further criticized the broader political climate, stating, “Museveni and his enablers have taken over all public institutions and doing everything possible to silence any kind of dissent. While we explore legal remedies for this brother, this is a reminder of why we must work hard in unity to put an end to this mess.”
