Mugimba calls for early private sector investment ahead of AFCON 2027
CAF officials say the meeting underscores a shared commitment between the continental body and the host nations to ensure strong coordination and operational readiness as preparations gather pace.
Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations have gained momentum following the arrival of a high-level delegation from the Confederation of African Football for a strategic workshop with the three host nations.
Dr. Dennis Mugimba, Chair of Communications and Signage for the AFCON 2027 Local Organising Committee, described the visit as a major milestone in the country’s journey towards hosting the continental showpiece.
“The arrival of CAF marks a significant milestone in formally kick-starting Uganda’s preparations for AFCON 2027,” Mugimba said, noting that the two-day engagement signals the transition from planning to implementation.
Uganda is co-hosting the tournament under the PAMOJA partnership alongside Kenya and Tanzania, with the three nations expected to deliver a jointly coordinated tournament.
Mugimba revealed that the government has already released substantial funding towards the development of training facilities, a move he said demonstrates Uganda’s commitment to meeting CAF infrastructure standards ahead of the tournament.
“The government has shown clear commitment by availing funds to support infrastructure development, particularly training facilities, which are critical for hosting,” he added.
Beyond infrastructure, Mugimba urged Uganda’s private sector to position itself early to benefit from the economic opportunities that come with hosting AFCON.
“This tournament will open up opportunities across multiple sectors, including hospitality, transport, media and merchandise. The private sector should prepare now to take full advantage,” he said.
The CAF delegation is in Kampala for meetings scheduled for April 22–23, bringing together officials from the three host governments, football association leaders, and CAF executives led by Acting Secretary General Samson Adamu.
The discussions are expected to focus on key areas such as infrastructure, safety and security, broadcasting, finance, ticketing and commercial operations—critical components in delivering a successful tournament.
