Electoral Commission releases roadmap for Kalangala Woman MP by-election
The by-election became necessary after the death of Nakimuli, who had been elected to represent Kalangala District in the 12th Parliament under the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has released the electoral programme for the by-election of the District Woman Member of Parliament for Kalangala District following the death of Woman MP-elect Hellen Nakimuli.
According to the programme published by the Electoral Commission, preparations for the by-election are already underway, with stakeholders’ engagement forming part of the initial activities.
The by-election became necessary after the death of Nakimuli, who had been elected to represent Kalangala District in the 12th Parliament under the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
Electoral Commission Chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama said the Commission is following constitutional procedures to fill the vacant parliamentary seat.
Under Uganda’s electoral laws, the Clerk to Parliament is required to officially notify the Electoral Commission of the vacancy, after which the Commission organizes a by-election within 60 days.
The EC has already commenced consultations and preparatory meetings in Kalangala District aimed at briefing political stakeholders, aspirants, security agencies and local leaders on the electoral roadmap and nomination processes.
Justice Byabakama recently assured residents of Kalangala that the Commission would ensure a free and fair by-election in accordance with the law.
The death of Nakimuli created an unusual political situation in which Kalangala District entered the new parliamentary term without a Woman MP representative after the deceased had already won the seat for the 2026–2031 term.
The Electoral Commission said detailed timelines for nominations, campaigns and polling activities are contained in the official programme released on its website.
