Muhoozi withdraws PLU endorsement of Anita Among and Thomas Tayebwa for Speakership

The withdrawal of support for Among and Tayebwa is expected to intensify speculation over possible changes in the leadership race for Parliament, particularly regarding the candidates that may eventually receive official backing from President Yoweri Museveni.

The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has withdrawn its earlier endorsement of Anita Annet Among and Thomas Tayebwa for the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the 12th Parliament.

In a statement dated May 12, 2026, and signed by PLU General Secretary David Kabanda, the organisation announced that its previous directive issued on March 11, 2026, had been “retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.”

The earlier communication had instructed all PLU-leaning Members of Parliament-elect to support Among and Tayebwa for the top parliamentary leadership positions.

According to the new statement issued from the PLU offices in Naguru, the decision follows fresh guidance from the PLU Chairman, Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

“The leadership of the Patriotic League of Uganda encourages its Hon. Members Elect to support the candidates that will be presented to them by H.E the President for the position of Speaker and Deputy Speaker,” the statement reads.

The development signals a shift in PLU’s political position ahead of the election of parliamentary leaders for the incoming 12th Parliament, a process closely watched within the ruling political establishment.

The statement further emphasized loyalty to the directives of Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, noting that members of the organisation are expected to follow “the command, instructions and guidance” of the chairman at all times.

The withdrawal of support for Among and Tayebwa is expected to intensify speculation over possible changes in the leadership race for Parliament, particularly regarding the candidates that may eventually receive official backing from President Yoweri Museveni.

Neither Among nor Tayebwa had publicly commented on the PLU decision by press time.
