Museveni bids farewell to outgoing US ambassador William Popp
Ambassador Popp has served as the United States' top diplomat in Uganda during a period marked by continued engagement between the two countries in areas including trade, health, security, education and development cooperation.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has bid farewell to William W. Popp, commending the outgoing diplomat for his contribution to strengthening relations between Uganda and the United States during his tenure.
The meeting took place at the State Lodge in Nakasero, where President Museveni received Ambassador Popp as he concludes his diplomatic assignment in Uganda.
According to the President, the two leaders held discussions on matters of mutual interest and cooperation between the two countries, reflecting the longstanding relationship between Kampala and Washington.
“I thank Ambassador Popp for his service over the past years and for his contribution to strengthening the cordial relations between Uganda and the United States,” Museveni said.
The President also wished the ambassador success in his future assignments and endeavours.
Ambassador Popp has served as the United States’ top diplomat in Uganda during a period marked by continued engagement between the two countries in areas including trade, health, security, education and development cooperation.
His tenure also coincided with ongoing collaboration between Uganda and the United States on regional peace and security issues, as well as public health programmes and economic development initiatives.
The farewell meeting comes as Uganda and the United States continue to maintain diplomatic ties spanning several decades. The two countries have cooperated in a range of sectors, including counterterrorism efforts, humanitarian assistance, health interventions and private sector investment.
Diplomatic observers note that farewell courtesy calls by outgoing ambassadors provide an opportunity to review bilateral relations and discuss areas of future cooperation before a diplomat takes up a new assignment.
While details of Ambassador Popp’s next posting were not immediately disclosed, President Museveni’s remarks underscored Uganda’s appreciation for his role in advancing relations between the two nations.
The departure of the ambassador marks the end of a chapter in Uganda-US diplomatic engagement, with both countries expected to continue pursuing areas of shared interest under new diplomatic leadership.
