Parliament summons works minister over road safety and stalled infrastructure projects
Minister Byamukama is expected to respond to the committee's concerns when he appears before legislators on Tuesday.

Parliament’s Committee on Physical Infrastructure has summoned the Minister of Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, to appear before it on Tuesday to explain the continued rise in road accidents and the growing number of road projects that have been left incomplete after contractors abandoned their works.
The committee is expected to seek updates on measures the ministry is taking to improve road safety, oversee the implementation of road projects, and address delays that have affected transport infrastructure in several parts of the country.
The summons comes at a time when road safety remains a major public concern in Uganda. Fatal crashes involving passenger vehicles, motorcycles and cargo trucks continue to claim lives, prompting repeated calls for stricter enforcement of traffic laws, improved road engineering and better driver compliance.
Lawmakers are also expected to question the ministry about stalled road projects that have disrupted transport, increased travel costs and slowed economic activity in some areas. In previous years, delays have been linked to challenges including funding constraints, land acquisition disputes, contractor performance and project management.
The committee’s oversight meeting is intended to establish the status of the affected projects, assess the ministry’s supervision of contractors and examine the government’s plans to ensure delayed road works are completed while improving safety across the national road network.
Minister Byamukama is expected to respond to the committee’s concerns when he appears before legislators on Tuesday.
