Government gives contractor 90 days to start tarmacking Masaka–Kyotera–Mutukula road

The directive was issued during an inspection of the project by the Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Byamukama, and other government officials, who expressed concern that the pace of construction remains below expectations.

The Government has given the contractor handling the Masaka–Kyotera–Mutukula Road project 90 days to commence tarmacking works following concerns over slow progress on the strategic regional corridor.

The directive was issued during an inspection of the project by the Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Byamukama, and other government officials, who expressed concern that the pace of construction remains below expectations.

According to officials, physical progress on the project stands at about 23–30 percent, despite only two years remaining on the contract period.

The Masaka–Kyotera–Mutukula Road connects Uganda to the United Republic of Tanzania and is considered a key route for trade, tourism, and cross-border movement.

The contractor was also directed to intensify dust suppression measures by regularly watering the road corridor to reduce accidents linked to poor visibility caused by dust. Officials also raised concerns over the absence of speed humps along some sections of the road.

Government has committed UGX 629 billion towards the project, scheduled for implementation under the 2024–2028 programme, and warned that the contractor must demonstrate faster progress on the ground.

The Ministry of Works and Transport said it will continue monitoring the project to ensure adherence to quality standards and timely completion.
