Judiciary deepens understanding of oil and gas sector through Albertine Graben study visit
The excursion ended with a dinner hosted by Chief Justice Justice Dr Flavian Zeija at Kabalega Resort in Hoima, where participants celebrated the success of the programme and strengthened institutional partnerships.
The Judiciary has concluded a three-day oil and gas field excursion across Uganda’s Albertine Graben, with judicial officers and representatives from partner institutions reflecting on lessons gained from the programme.
The study visit, organised by the Judicial Training Institute (JTI) in partnership with the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU), Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), Uganda Revenue Authority (URA), and Bank of Uganda (BoU), exposed participants to Uganda’s petroleum industry and its role in national development.
The excursion ended with a dinner hosted by Chief Justice Justice Dr Flavian Zeija at Kabalega Resort in Hoima, where participants celebrated the success of the programme and strengthened institutional partnerships.
Justice Zeija emphasized the Judiciary’s role in supporting economic growth, saying an efficient justice system is as important as physical infrastructure such as roads and bridges.
He noted that investors consider the effectiveness of dispute resolution before committing resources, warning that delays in handling commercial disputes could discourage investment.
The Chief Justice urged judicial officers to prioritize cases that have a direct impact on Uganda’s development, particularly in strategic sectors like oil and gas, while upholding the law.
He described the field visit as an eye-opening experience that gave participants a deeper understanding of the scale and complexity of Uganda’s petroleum industry.
Justice Zeija proposed forming a joint working group with PAU, UNOC, URA and BoU to compile a report from the study visit and guide future collaboration between the Judiciary and sector institutions.
Deputy Chief Justice Justice Moses Kazibwe Kawumi said the excursion aimed at improving judicial officers’ understanding of the oil and gas sector and validating research conducted on the industry. He commended technical teams for simplifying complex petroleum concepts for participants.
