Law firm, Diaspora body sign deal to boost Ugandan Investments from Canada
Kalikumutima & Co. Advocates has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Alliance of Ugandan Canadian Associations (NAUCA), in a move aimed at strengthening diaspora investment, enhancing legal protection, and deepening economic ties between Uganda and Ugandans living in Canada.
The partnership establishes a structured legal support framework under which the Kampala-based law firm will serve as NAUCA’s designated legal advisory partner in Uganda. The collaboration is expected to streamline investment processes for Ugandans abroad while addressing longstanding concerns over transparency, compliance, and risk management.
Diaspora remittances remain a vital pillar of Uganda’s economy, with inflows estimated at about USD 1.5 billion (approximately UGX 6.5 trillion) in the 2024/2025 financial year. Analysts say such contributions reflect both financial commitment and sustained confidence by Ugandans living abroad in the country’s economic prospects.
Under the agreement, Kalikumutima & Co. Advocates will support Ugandans in Canada in areas including property acquisition, business registration, joint venture structuring, estate planning, and dispute prevention. The firm will also provide advisory services on banking, financing, and immigration-related processes.
Speaking on the development, Counsel Deo Kalikumutima, Chief Executive Partner at the firm, said the partnership seeks to close a long-standing gap for diaspora investors.
“For far too long, our diaspora brothers and sisters have sought meaningful opportunities to invest back home; they simply lacked a trusted and structured pathway. We are proud to serve as that bridge under NAUCA,” he said, adding that the initiative will promote confidence, certainty, and transparency in cross-border investments.
The partnership will also see the firm participate as a sponsor and legal partner at the inaugural NAUCA Business & Cultural Convention slated for October 9–11, 2026, in Vancouver, Canada. The convention is expected to bring together investors, policymakers, professionals, and members of the Ugandan diaspora to explore trade opportunities and strengthen bilateral linkages.
According to NAUCA President Justus Mirembe, the collaboration goes beyond legal advisory and is intended to build trust and safeguard investments.
“For many Ugandans abroad, investing back home is deeply personal, but often constrained by uncertainty and concerns over potential loss. Through this partnership, we are providing legally enforceable protections and dependable support at every stage,” Mirembe said.
During the convention and subsequent engagements, the law firm will conduct legal advisory clinics focusing on secure investment structuring, due diligence, and the protection of trans-generational wealth. It will also offer guidance on documentation requirements for Canadian Temporary Resident Visa applications, while noting that final decisions remain with Canadian immigration authorities.
NAUCA, a unifying body representing Ugandan Canadians, is focused on promoting economic, social, and cultural linkages between Uganda and its diaspora. Kalikumutima & Co. Advocates, on the other hand, positions itself as a full-service law firm committed to safeguarding investments and strengthening confidence in Uganda’s legal and business environment.
Stakeholders say the partnership could play a significant role in unlocking diaspora capital while improving accountability and investor protection frameworks in Uganda.
