Minister Asiimwe inspects Mpoma Satellite Station rehabilitation works
During the visit, the Minister assessed the progress of Phase II renovation works being undertaken by the National Engineering Corporation (NEC) and inspected the station’s existing geostationary satellite antennas.

The Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiiki, has inspected ongoing rehabilitation and modernization works at the Mpoma Satellite Station aimed at restoring Uganda’s satellite communication infrastructure and strengthening the country’s space science capabilities.
During the visit, the Minister assessed the progress of Phase II renovation works being undertaken by the National Engineering Corporation (NEC) and inspected the station’s existing geostationary satellite antennas.
Eng. Asiimwe said the government is committed to ensuring the timely commissioning of the Mpoma Satellite Station, describing it as a strategic national asset that will play a key role in advancing Uganda’s space sector.
“With Phase II nearing completion and key components of Phase III already delivered, the facility will strengthen Uganda’s space infrastructure, expand satellite communication capabilities, support research and innovation, and accelerate the growth of the country’s emerging space industry,” he said.
The Minister noted that the government is also developing the necessary policy, legal, and regulatory frameworks to guide the sustainable growth and governance of Uganda’s space science, technology, and innovation ecosystem.
Once operational, the Mpoma Satellite Station is expected to enhance reliable broadband connectivity, strengthen strategic communications, support national security, and enable Uganda to harness space technologies for scientific advancement and socio-economic transformation.
The rehabilitation of the facility forms part of government efforts to position Uganda as a key player in space technology and satellite-based solutions in the region.
