New statistics house in Entebbe to boost Uganda’s statistical capacity

The Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Henry Musasizi, has emphasized the importance of investing in statistical infrastructure, saying reliable official statistics are essential for Uganda’s socio-economic development.

Musasizi made the remarks during the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Statistics House in Entebbe, a project expected to strengthen the country’s data systems and support evidence-based planning.

UBOS Board Chairman Mr. Albert Byamugisha described the project as a major milestone in the institution’s efforts to build a stronger and more sustainable national statistical system.

Byamugisha said the investment demonstrates confidence in UBOS and recognizes the vital role statistics play in shaping government policies, programmes, and Uganda’s development agenda.

He noted that the new facility will strengthen Uganda’s readiness to host the East African Statistics Bureau, while creating opportunities for regional collaboration, knowledge exchange, employment, and economic growth.

The Statistics House will include a modern data processing centre, a Data Science and Innovation Hub, training facilities, and other spaces aimed at expanding statistical capacity across the National Statistical System.

According to Byamugisha, the facility will improve UBOS’ ability to coordinate statistical operations, adopt emerging technologies, and produce timely, reliable, and relevant data to guide national transformation.

He added that the project is a shared commitment between government, development partners, and the UBOS community to establish an institution that will serve future generations.

The new Statistics House will also support innovation through the use of big data, artificial intelligence, and modern statistical approaches, positioning Uganda for a future-ready data system.
