No Ugandan has died in Turkey earthquake – Foreign Affairs ministry

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that no Ugandan national died as a result of the catastrophic earthquake that shattered East of Nurdagi Gaziarrtep Province in Turkey, near the Syria border, on Monday 6th February 2023.

The ministry in a statement released Friday said only three Ugandans were affected by the natural disaster. Only one of the three sustained injuries and is responding to treatment. The other two have been contacted by the Ugandan officials and are well.

Most Ugandans in Turkey reside in Ankara, Istanbul, Konya, Izmir, and Antalya which cities were not affected, the ministry said. The affected three stay in Diyarbakir, Nurdagi Gaziarrtep Province.

The death of Fred Lumbuye, a political critic of the regime, as reported on social was fake, the foreign affairs ministry said. It encouraged Ugandans in Turkey to reach out to Uganda Embassy in Ankara, Turkey by email: Ugandaembassyturkey@gmail.com; Tel: +905396440840, +905313468102 ) for consular support.

“The Ministry together with the Uganda Embassy in Ankara will continue to monitor and follow up on its nationals in Tiirkiye and provide regular updates,” the statement added.
