Petroleum Authority benchmarks with UETCL on national grid operations

The meeting also addressed challenges facing the electricity transmission sector and explored opportunities for collaboration as Uganda’s petroleum industry moves closer to the operational phase.

The Board of Directors of the Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) has conducted a benchmarking visit to the National Control Centre of Uganda Electricity Transmission Company Limited (UETCL) in Lugogo, Kampala, as part of efforts to strengthen collaboration across Uganda’s energy sector.

The delegation was led by the PAU Board Chairperson, Lynda Biribonwa, and was received by the Chairman of the UETCL Board, Kwame Ejalu.

During the engagement, Ejalu shared insights into Uganda’s national electricity grid, highlighting the country’s current grid coverage, key achievements by UETCL, as well as ongoing and planned projects aimed at expanding power transmission infrastructure.

The meeting also addressed challenges facing the electricity transmission sector and explored opportunities for collaboration as Uganda’s petroleum industry moves closer to the operational phase.

Ejalu welcomed the visit, noting that the exchange of knowledge between the two institutions comes at a critical moment when the country’s oil and gas sector is transitioning from exploration to production.

“Your decision to learn from a company with over 25 years of experience in managing and operating Uganda’s national electricity grid reflects a strong commitment to strengthening the energy sector,” Ejalu said.

“This visit has undoubtedly fostered valuable insights and knowledge exchange within the industry,” he added.

Following the discussions, members of the PAU board toured the National Control Centre, where they received a guided overview of the operations that manage and monitor Uganda’s national electricity grid.

Officials said the experience and technical insights gained during the visit are expected to help the petroleum sector adopt best practices, particularly as the country prepares for the operational phase of its oil and gas industry.

The engagement underscores growing cooperation between energy institutions as Uganda works to build a more integrated and resilient energy framework to support economic growth.
