ROAD ACCIDENTS: Police reinstates driver badges for bus drivers
"Following the crashes of buses on the road, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has decided to reinstate the driver badges immediately," Nampiima told a press conference Monday morning.
To curb the increasing number of road accidents, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has decided to reinstate the driver badges immediately, Faridah Nampiima, the Traffic Police Spokesperson, has revealed.
“Following the crashes of buses on the road, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety has decided to reinstate the driver badges immediately,” Nampiima told a press conference Monday morning.
“All bus owners are informed to submit the details of all bus drivers to the Ministry of Works and Transport for verification,” she revealed further.
Road accidents, especially those involving buses have left scores dead and injured.
On the morning of 6th January 2023, about 19 lives were lost when a bus travelling from Kampala to Gulu rammed into a stationed trailer at Adebe trading centre, one kilometre to corner Kamdini checkpoint.
On 30th December 2022, Police in Ntungamo registered a fatal accident at Rwahi (after Satellite Hotel) along the Ntungamo-Kabale road claiming the lives of six people.
The accident involved motor vehicle registration number RAD798B HYUNDAI bus, belonging to Volcano Bus Company and motor vehicle registration number KCU054L (SCANIA) belonging to Oxygen Bus Company.
Nampiima said reckless driving remains the leading cause of accidents on the roads.
“Divers do not obey traffic signs and rules on the road and drift from one side of the road to another without exercising caution,” she said, adding that some vehicles are also not in good mechanical condition.
Police now direct that all bus owners shall use their buses within the prescribed time in their route charts. No bus shall be allowed to operate on the road out of time, Nampiima said.
“All traffic officers are directed to randomly check on driving licenses for three days effective today. All motorcycle riders have been given three days to renew, and carry copies of their driving licenses,” she announced.
Last week, the Deputy Speaker, Thomas Tayebwa, directed the Minister for Works and Transport to present a statement on the road accidents and what the enforcing agencies are doing to curb the carnage.
