Six arrested, charged over alleged land crimes in Masaka City
The Minister of Local Government, Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, said investigations were launched immediately after the public outcry, with the suspects apprehended by a joint security team involving the Uganda Police Force and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
Six suspects have been arrested and charged in connection with alleged land-related offences in Masaka City following public complaints that prompted intervention by security agencies.
The Minister of Local Government, Barugahara Balaam Ateenyi, said investigations were launched immediately after the public outcry, with the suspects apprehended by a joint security team involving the Uganda Police Force and the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.
After completion of investigations, the case files were submitted to the Chief Resident State Attorney, who sanctioned criminal charges against the suspects.
Four suspects — Nakabiri Zulaika, 34, a businesswoman; Bugembe Edirisa, 40; Dumba Abdul, 19; and Makumbi Abbey, 19 — are facing charges under Nyendo CRB 429/2026.
They are charged with unlawfully occupying land belonging to another person without the owner’s consent, theft, and destroying growing crops, offences contrary to the Land Act and Penal Code Act.
Two other suspects, Jukko John, 30, a boda boda rider, and Ntale Godfrey, 42, the LC I Chairperson-elect of Misali Cell, are charged under Nyendo CRB 508/2026 with theft and conspiracy to commit a felony.
The six suspects are expected to appear before the Masaka Chief Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, July 30, 2026, for plea taking.
Minister Ateenyi commended the Uganda Police Force, State House Anti-Corruption Unit, Directorate of Public Prosecutions, and other investigating agencies for their response and handling of the matter.
He said investigations into related offences are still ongoing and warned that anyone found culpable would face the law.
“The commitment to protecting citizens’ property rights, upholding the rule of law, and ensuring accountability remains unwavering. No one is above the law,” Ateenyi said.
